CW 08/2021 - Article: Choose Boring Technology
You know boring software right ? Something like Batch, FTP, Internet Explorer or wireless connections via Bluetooth.
These are mainly the things that have been depprecated, called out as insecure and are to be avoided.
Yet, you might also know this other kind of boring technology like SSH, mysql or static website hosting.
Why have these usefull tools changed to the "Boring" category ?
In my opinion, it's because these tools have been proven helpful in the long run, each containing libraries of documentation and some even have their own (real) "best practices".
Plus, most of these technologies already have a "newer version" with way more and flashier features.
Its this world of rappid headlines and huge amount of startups and gurus we live in, that makes these things utterly "boring".
The ironic part of this is, that this "hot, new stuff" makes us leave behind the mess like SQL or DNS (old), only to get us tangled in a new technological mess (e.g.: IPV6, the new USB standards and the corporate tendency to pic overdimensioned solutions).
In his static "Boring Technology Club" website Dan McKinley addresses this dichotomy and why he positions himself on the "well understood" side. Thankfully he doesn't circle about specific software/technology (which most people do) and more about actual concepts and management-contributor interaction, but have a look for yourself:
